Four individuals, including a police officer, suffered injuries in a stabbing incident in Sydney early Sunday, according to police reports. The latest attack is part of a troubling trend involving knife assaults in Australia's largest city this year.

The suspect, who fled the scene, was apprehended and is now in police custody. New South Wales state Police Minister Yasmin Catley assured the public that there is no ongoing threat. Police confirmed that there were no fatalities in the attack, which followed a collision in the southern suburb of Engadine.

Aerial footage captured by the Australian Broadcasting Corp displayed two crashed vehicles, sealed off with police tape. Sydney, with a population of 5 million, has faced a wave of knife attacks in 2023, prompting the New South Wales government to tighten knife laws. In June, state parliament approved measures allowing police to use electronic metal-detecting scanners in public spaces without a warrant.

In a related incident in April, a knife attack at a Bondi mall resulted in six deaths and 12 injuries.
