France's acting interior minister has mandated additional police reinforcements at Jewish places of worship following a suspected arson attack on a synagogue in the southwestern Mediterranean town of La Grande Motte.

Early Saturday morning, two cars parked near the Beth Yaacov synagogue were set on fire, resulting in the injury of a police officer, according to local reports. The number of occupants inside the synagogue remains unknown, but no other injuries have been reported. One of the vehicles contained a propane gas tank, further escalating concerns.

Acting Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin classified the event as an 'attempted arson' and a 'clearly criminal act.' He assured Jewish citizens of full government support and pledged that all resources will be used to find the perpetrator. Darmanin, along with acting Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, is set to visit La Grande Motte. Increased security measures come amid a rise in antisemitism, particularly since the Israel-Hamas conflict last year.
