Spanish authorities are facing the possibility of up to 150,000 additional migrants from Africa making the dangerous journey to the Canary Islands, as stated by the regional leader Fernando Clavijo on Friday. The islands have already seen over 20,000 illegal arrivals this year.

In a news conference with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, Clavijo stressed the severity of the situation, noting that August witnessed mass arrivals despite poor sea conditions. He emphasized that September through November could be even more challenging. Clavijo cited warnings from charity groups that around 150,000 migrants, many escaping conflict in Mali, are preparing to cross first to Mauritania and then by boat to the Spanish archipelago.

Rescue services saved a boat with 173 migrants near El Hierro on Friday, although one passenger had died. To address the crisis, Sanchez will undertake a tour of West African countries next week to aid local efforts against illegal migration. Clavijo praised the initiative but urged stronger diplomatic pressure and legal amendments to facilitate the transfer of underage migrants to mainland Spain, rather than expanding the Canaries' reception facilities.
