Ghaziabad Police on Thursday apprehended Dr. Abdur Rahman for allegedly converting to Hinduism to deceive his colleague, whom he married six years ago. His arrest comes under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021.

The act primarily targets conversions achieved through force or deceit, often implicating Muslim men accused of converting women to Islam for marriage. Rahman is also charged with causing burn injuries to his wife, Harsha Sarangi, which he claims happened accidentally.

The couple married in a 2018 ceremony at an Arya Samaj temple and have a son together. The case was registered by Sarangi's mother and includes additional accusations of operating under the guise of 'love jihad', a term used by right-wing activists to describe an alleged campaign to convert Hindu women to Islam through romantic relationships.
