President Vladimir Putin on Thursday accused Ukraine of attempting to strike the Kursk nuclear power plant in an overnight attack. He stated that Moscow had informed the U.N. nuclear safety watchdog about the alleged situation. However, Putin did not offer any further details or provide documentary evidence.
Ukraine has yet to comment on the accusation. This alleged incursion into Kursk, the largest attack on Russia by a foreign power since World War Two, reportedly saw thousands of Ukrainian troops breach Russia's western border on August 6. The assault appeared to catch Moscow off guard.
At the same meeting, Alexei Smirnov, the acting governor of the Kursk region, assured Putin and the officials present that the situation at the Kursk nuclear power station remained stable.
