The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) accused the Kolkata police on Thursday of attempting to cover up the rape and murder of a post-graduate medic at RG Kar Medical College. The federal agency alleged that the crime scene had been altered before they took over the investigation.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the CBI, told a Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud that both senior doctors and the victim's colleagues suspected a cover-up and had requested videography of the scene. Despite their intervention, the initial investigation was marred by delays and alterations.
Appearing for the West Bengal government, senior advocate Kapil Sibal contested the CBI's allegations, asserting that procedures were followed correctly and everything was documented. The Supreme Court criticized the West Bengal government for the delayed filing of the FIR and the chaos at the hospital. The case continues to provoke nationwide outrage.
