In a letter to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, BJP West Bengal MP Jyotirmoy Singh Mahato requested the expedited trial of cases related to the rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Mahato expressed gratitude to the Supreme Court for taking suo motu cognisance of the tragic incident but stressed the need for swifter proceedings to avoid public frustration.
Mahato also called for action against Kolkata Commissioner of Police Vineet Kumar Goyal and other officials for their alleged roles in tampering with evidence and obstructing justice. He accused the police of mishandling evidence, rushing procedural matters, and lacking transparency, which he said eroded public trust in the justice system.
The body of the trainee doctor was found on August 9 in the seminar room of the hospital, igniting nationwide protests. Following the incident, a civic volunteer was arrested, and the CBI detained the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandip Ghosh, for alleged financial misconduct. The event led to the unanimous passage of the 'Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024' in the West Bengal Assembly, which aims to increase penalties for crimes against women and mandates the completion of rape case investigations within 24 days.
