Scuffles broke out on Thursday in Kolkata between police personnel and BJP supporters during a protest march addressing the alleged rape and murder of a woman doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital.
The protest, which began at Hudco crossing and aimed to reach 'Swasthya Bhawan,' saw BJP leaders attempting to breach police barricades. The police resorted to using lathis to disperse the crowd after initial pacification attempts failed.
Among those detained was Leader of the Opposition, Suvendu Adhikari. The BJP accused the state government and health department of concealing the truth, demanding justice and the resignation of Mamata Banerjee. The investigation, transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court, is ongoing.
