The Supreme Court on Thursday called on protesting doctors to return to work amid nationwide outrage over the rape and murder of a postgraduate medic at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. The court assured the doctors that no adverse action would be taken against them once they resumed their duties.

A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, which included Justices J B Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, heard claims by counsel for resident doctors at AIIMS Nagpur that they were being victimized for their protests. Chief Justice Chandrachud emphasized the need for doctors to return to work to ensure public health infrastructure continues to function.

The bench advised the doctors to report back to duty, assuring support if any issues arise after their return. The case, which has seen massive protests, involves a junior doctor's body discovered with severe injuries in a seminar hall on August 9. The probe was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
