Mizoram's Chief Minister Lalduhoma took a significant step towards enhancing the state's healthcare landscape as he inaugurated two major developments at Zoram Medical College in Aizawl. On Wednesday, the college witnessed the launch of Mizoram's first Master's degree program in Public Health. Alongside this academic milestone, the newly constructed 80-bed Curie's Ladies Hostel was also opened, heralding a new era for the institution.

The Chief Minister, in his address, highlighted the importance of these advancements. "Zoram Medical College stands as the sole medical institution of our state, and it is integral to the future of healthcare in Mizoram. Today's events are a testament to our dedication to quality education and infrastructure," he proclaimed.

Funded by the Ministry of DoNER through the NESIDS OTRI Scheme and executed by Mizoram PWD, the Curie's Ladies Hostel was constructed at a cost of Rs 10 crore. With amenities such as a mess, kitchen, and common room, the hostel enhances the accommodation facilities for nearly all MBBS female students, who make up 50-55 percent of the college's student body. This development, 16 km from the city centre, ensures a safer and more nurturing environment for the students.

The MPH program addresses the increasing demand for public health professionals and is recognized by UGC and WHO. It will offer placements to six students annually, at Rs 2 lakh per year, under Mizoram University, and aims for further educational collaboration with the Jodhpur School of Public Health. The initiative aligns with the National Health Policy 2017, emphasizing the establishment of a dedicated Public Health Cadre.

Zoram Medical College, since its inception in 2018, has enrolled 674 MBBS students. Among these, the initial group of 97 students has graduated, while the institution actively supports the current 97 interns and 480 ongoing MBBS students across various batches. Recruitment for new students is ongoing, with 85 out of 100 seats already filled.

These developments underscore the Mizoram government's commitment to advancing medical education and student facilities, solidifying its pivotal role in the state's healthcare sector.
