A suspect accused of murdering 42 women has escaped from police custody in Nairobi. Collins Jumaisi Khalusha, who was detained after the discovery of dismembered bodies in Kenya's capital, broke free alongside 12 inmates of Eritrean nationality.

Mohamed Amin, head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, confirmed the escape and indicated that the jailbreak might have been facilitated by insiders. Eight officers, including area and station commanders, are now facing disciplinary measures.

Khalusha was arrested in July after plastic sacks containing human remains were found. Despite his confession to the murders, Khalusha's lawyer insists he was tortured into admitting guilt. The police station has been cordoned off for further investigation.
