High Court Blocks Adani Group's Proposed Lease of Nairobi Airport
Kenya's high court has temporarily blocked a deal for India's Adani Group to lease Jomo Kenyatta International Airport. The Law Society of Kenya and the Kenya Human Rights Commission argued that Kenya could raise the funds independently, claiming the lease posed risks and did not provide value to taxpayers.
Kenya's high court has issued a temporary halt on a proposed agreement for India's Adani Group to lease Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport for 30 years, according to court documents.
The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) and the Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) jointly argued that Kenya could generate the $1.85 billion necessary for the airport's upgrades on its own. They said the long-term lease would lead to job losses, posed a fiscal risk, and lacked value for taxpayers, court documents published by KHRC indicated.
Following their request, the high court permitted a judicial review of the proposed lease. LSK's President Faith Odhiambo stated on social media that the court had issued a stay on any actions related to the Adani proposal until the case is concluded.
