The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP)'s Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday urged India to extradite deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, accusing her of attempts to thwart the nation's revolution.

Hasina, 76, fled to India on August 5 after significant protests against her government erupted over a controversial quota system in government jobs. Fakhrul remarked, "It is our call to you that you should hand her over to the government of Bangladesh in a legal way. The people of this country have given the decision for her trial. Let her face that trial," as published by the Daily Star newspaper.

Addressing reporters after laying a wreath at the grave of former president and BNP founder Zia-ur Rahman, Fakhrul accused India of failing to uphold its commitment to democracy by providing shelter to Hasina. Over 600 lives have been lost in the violence following the Hasina-led Awami League government's collapse, with Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus appointed as Chief Adviser in the interim government. Fakhrul praised the interim government's efforts, noting that their primary mission is to restore democracy by holding fair elections.
