Over 700 Star Tortoises were recovered at Chennai Airport, resulting in the arrest of three individuals, according to a statement by the Customs department on Monday.
Following specific inputs, officials intercepted three passengers at the international terminal just before their departure for Kuala Lumpur on August 16.
A thorough examination of their checked-in luggage revealed 778 Star Tortoises wrapped in adult diapers. The Wildlife Crime Control Bureau confirmed the species as Star Tortoises (Geochelone Elegans).
These tortoises are protected under the Wild Life (Protection) act, 1972, which prohibits their sale and transportation. An official release noted the violation of this act by the arrested individuals, who are now in judicial custody.
Star Tortoises are classified as 'vulnerable', with their population steadily declining due to illegal trade and poaching.
