The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday called for the resignation of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing the rape and murder of a woman doctor and a declining law and order situation in the state.

At a press conference at the state BJP office, national spokesperson Shazia Ilmi urged competent authorities to consider President's rule in West Bengal. 'Women's safety is under threat, and the law and order situation has deteriorated,' Ilmi stated.

Ilmi also pointed out the silence of women MPs from the ruling TMC and INDIA bloc amid nationwide protests by doctors demanding the enactment of the Central Protection Act for Doctors, a bill introduced in Parliament in 2022 but not yet enacted. She emphasized that Mamata Banerjee has no justification to continue as chief minister and should resign immediately. Resident doctors have launched an indefinite strike in solidarity with the agitation against the rape-murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata.
