A 15-year-old boy on Thursday became the first individual to face charges of rioting in connection with the recent violent unrest across the UK.

The Crown Prosecution Service announced that the teenager, whose identity remains undisclosed for legal reasons, will appear at South Tyneside Youth Court to enter a plea. He is charged for disturbances in Sunderland, northern England, on August 2.

'This defendant is one of several individuals we expect to charge with rioting,' said Gale Gilchrist, chief crown prosecutor for northeast England.

Violence erupted on July 30 after false information circulated online, suggesting that a suspect in a fatal knife attack involving three children was a Muslim asylum-seeker. Far-right activists incited attacks on a Southport mosque, triggering a spread of riots to other cities and towns nationwide.

While many participants have faced charges of violent disorder and received sentences, this marks the first rioting charge, a severe offense with a potential ten-year prison sentence.

Last week, a 26-year-old man received over three years in prison for using social media to incite the burning of hotels housing asylum-seekers.
