China has pledged technical aid and support to military-run Myanmar for conducting a census followed by an election, state media announced on Thursday, hinting at Beijing's backing to a junta grappling with an armed rebellion.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met junta leader Min Aung Hlaing on Wednesday during a visit to Naypyitaw. They discussed conducting an 'all-inclusive election', reported Global New Light Of Myanmar newspaper. The state-run publication elaborated that necessary technological assistance will be rendered for the census-taking process, alongside essential aid for the upcoming election.

Last month, Myanmar's military extended emergency rule for another six months to prepare census data required for voter lists. Min Aung Hlaing stated that an election would occur next year, although many parties likely participating are seen as proxies for the junta.

Wang Yi's meeting with other Myanmar military figures included discussions on the chaotic situation in restive border areas, the eradication of online gambling and scams, and economic cooperation. Wang emphasized China's non-interference stance and respect for Myanmar's political traditions. Border regions have witnessed heavy fighting, with the junta losing ground, particularly in northern Shan state. A temporary ceasefire brokered by Beijing collapsed in June, leading to resumed hostilities.
