Ukraine Advances, Russia Scrambles: Unprecedented Border Conflict
Russia is evacuating thousands of people from its border regions as Ukraine advances further into Russian territory. This represents the biggest foreign attack on Russia since World War Two, causing significant embarrassment for Moscow. Ukraine aims to create a buffer zone, while Russia vows to continue its war efforts.
Russia began evacuating thousands more people from its border regions on Thursday after Ukraine announced a deeper incursion aimed at slowing Moscow's advance along the front.
The incursion, the biggest foreign attack on sovereign Russian territory since World War Two, began on August 6. Thousands of Ukrainian troops, supported by drones, artillery, and tanks, breached Russia's Western border.
In response, Russia has evacuated at least 200,000 people and reported ongoing battles. Despite the Ukrainian offensive revealing vulnerabilities in Russia's border defenses, Moscow vows that the invasion will not alter the overall course of the war.
