A suspected Pakistani intruder attempting to cross into India from the Punjab border was shot dead by Border Security Force (BSF) personnel amid an ongoing 'high alert' ahead of Independence Day.

A BSF spokesperson reported that the man was seen surreptitiously crossing the international boundary in Dal village of Tarn Taran district around 8:30 pm on Monday, approaching the border fence.

The BSF troops on duty challenged the intruder, who ignored commands to stop and continued advancing towards the border security fence.

'Sensing imminent danger and given the heightened alert on the border due to upcoming Independence Day celebrations, the troops fired at the advancing intruder, neutralizing him on the spot,' the spokesperson stated.

The vigilant BSF forces once again thwarted nefarious cross-border terrorism attempts, preventing this infiltration bid from succeeding. The BSF has maintained a high alert along the 553-kilometer-long India-Pakistan frontier in Punjab since August 10 in preparation for Independence Day events on August 15.
