Kolkata Police are awaiting the final post-mortem report to reach a conclusion in the case of a woman doctor found dead at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, according to a senior officer.
The initial autopsy revealed signs of sexual abuse and murder, ruling out suicide.
''We are waiting for the final autopsy report to conclude,'' the officer told PTI. The preliminary report cited injuries all over the victim's body, including her face, belly, and neck, alongside signs of strangulation and smothering.
Meanwhile, circumstantial evidence suggests the doctor, attacked while sleeping alone in the hospital's seminar hall, resisted but was overpowered and possibly raped post-murder. The suspect, an outsider frequently seen on hospital premises, was arrested and charged with rape and murder.
Authorities have heightened hospital security, expelling two security personnel for negligence. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has pledged to seek the death penalty for the perpetrator.
