Vyacheslav Volodin, chairman of Russia's State Duma, is advocating for a new law that would require migrants to register for military service as part of their Russian citizenship application process, according to a statement released by the Duma on Monday. Volodin is a key ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Duma's statement also indicated that parliamentarians are pushing to increase the mandatory military service duration to two years for new Russian citizens within certain age brackets. Additionally, there are proposals to amend the law to make military service compulsory for older migrants who obtain Russian passports.
