Hamas has accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of preventing a ceasefire in Gaza by introducing new conditions to a U.S.-backed truce proposal, following the latest mediated talks.

The group claims Israel's latest response, after discussions in Rome with Israel, the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, shows Netanyahu's return to tactics of procrastination and evasion. Netanyahu's office did not comment on these allegations. Israel asserts that Hamas is obstructing the truce deal.

Hamas spokespersons stated that Netanyahu is retracting from a previously mediated proposal based on an "Israeli paper." Meanwhile, the U.S., backing the negotiations, believes a deal is near, following a proposal by President Joe Biden in May. While Hamas seeks a ceasefire to end the Gaza conflict, Netanyahu insists on Hamas's defeat prior to any ceasefire. Disagreements also persist on the execution of the potential deal.

Mediators Qatar and Egypt, supported by the U.S., are optimistic that negotiation doors remain open, with both parties showing willingness to continue talks.
