In a significant move to strengthen ties with ASEAN nations, India has decided to almost double the number of scholarships available to ASEAN students at Nalanda University. This was announced by Jaideep Mazumdar, Secretary East in the Ministry of External Affairs, during a press briefing on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Laos. The expansion of scholarships underlines India's commitment to fostering educational exchanges between India and ASEAN countries.

Apart from educational initiatives, the press briefing spotlighted India's emphasis on establishing secure, resilient, and reliable supply chains as a cornerstone of its relationship with ASEAN. The ASEAN-India Women's Scientist Conclave is set to be institutionalized, funded by the ASEAN India Science and Technology Development Fund, further solidifying scientific collaboration. Additionally, by 2025, discussions on revising the ASEAN-India Free Trade and Goods Agreement will be expedited to enhance trade relationships.

Prime Minister Modi's visit also highlighted India's active participation in disaster resilience with a commitment of USD 5 million towards ASEAN's disaster management capabilities. The Prime Minister called on ASEAN leaders to participate in climate initiatives, such as the 'one tree for mother' campaign. At the ASEAN-India Summit, two key declarations were adopted, focusing on the Act East policy and advancing digital transformation, reaffirming India's strategic partnerships in the region.
