Grand celebrations took place at Wall Street in New York City to commemorate India's 78th Independence Day. The event was graced by New York City Mayor Eric Adams and Indian Consulate General to New York Binaya Srikanta Pradhan. It was organized by the Indian Cultural Association of North America.

Mayor Adams highlighted the impactful contributions of Indian and Indian-origin professionals in business, healthcare, and education sectors. He remarked, 'This showcases the strength of the Indian community. You bring pride not only to this city but to our entire nation.' He also pointed out the historic significance of Kamala Harris, the first black individual of Indian heritage to serve as US Vice President and a major party's presidential nominee.

During the celebration, it was announced that, for the first time, New York City schools will be closed for Diwali. Dilip Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner for the New York City Mayor's Office for International Affairs, stated that this decision, initiated last year by Mayor Adams, is a sign of respect for the cultural diversity that strengthens the community.

The Indian Consulate General Pradhan emphasized the growing India-US partnership, aligning with President Biden's view of it being the most important partnership of the 21st century. He noted that this celebration also marks India's progress over the past 78 years, and the significant contributions of Indian individuals in the U.S. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also hoisted the national flag at the Red Fort, celebrating India's strides towards becoming a developed nation by 2047.
