Deposed Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has called for a thorough investigation into the violence and vandalism that occurred in July. In her first statement since leaving Bangladesh after what appears to be her resignation, Hasina demanded that those responsible be identified and punished.
The statement, released by her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy on his social media handle X, also urged citizens to observe the National Mourning Day on August 15 with respect and solemnity. She asked people to pray for the salvation of souls by offering floral garlands at Bangabandhu Bhaban and lamented the tarnishing of Bangladesh's reputation as a respected developing country.
Hasina expressed deep pain over the disrespect shown to the Father of the Nation, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, stating that it was an insult to the martyrs who fought for independence. Condemning the loss of lives due to recent violence, she called for justice and acknowledged the suffering of various segments of society, including students, teachers, police officials, journalists, and members of the Awami League. Bangladesh is experiencing political turmoil, with Hasina's resignation and mounting protests led mainly by students.
