The electricity prices in Pakistan have surged for the 14th time in the last year, increasing the burden on Pakistani citizens, reported ARY News. According to details, 14 adjustments from July 2023 to August 2024 have resulted in an added cost exceeding Rs 455 billion to consumers.

These adjustments have significantly increased power prices, with the highest rise of Rs 7.06 per unit in March 2024. The incessant changes in electricity prices have made it difficult for citizens to manage their expenses, ARY News reported.

People have urged the Pakistan government to review the fuel adjustment mechanism to provide relief. In an incident highlighting the strain, a man killed his brother over an electricity bill dispute in Gujranwala as the bill exceeded Rs 30,000, reported ARY News.

Recently, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) announced a tariff increase of PKR 2.56 per unit, adding to the financial burden citizens face. Additionally, K-Electric announced that Karachi residents will receive inflated August bills, including three-month adjustments costing up to PKR 3.22 per unit, ARY News reported.
