In a critical address on Thursday evening, Israel's Defence Minister Yoav Gallant directed a stern message to the people of Lebanon. Gallant accused Shiite Iran and Hezbollah of holding Lebanon captive for sectarian interests. 'Shiite Iran and those who submit [to its ideology], led by Hezbollah, have taken Lebanon and its people hostage for the sake of narrow sectarian interests,' Gallant declared.
The minister reiterated Israel's commitment to peace and stability on both sides of the northern border, while simultaneously warning against Hezbollah's actions. 'The State of Israel seeks peace, prosperity, and stability on both sides of the northern border. Therefore, we will not allow the Hezbollah militia to destabilize the border and the region. If Hezbollah continues its aggression, Israel will fight it, with all its might,' Gallant asserted.
Drawing on historical context, Gallant cautioned the Lebanese people to avoid repeating past mistakes. He referred to the 2006 second Lebanon War and the subsequent regret expressed by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. 'Learn the lesson of the past so as not to fall into a dangerous scenario in August 2024,' he warned. Gallant concluded with a forewarning, quoting an Arab saying: 'He who plays with fire may expect destruction.'
