India successfully concluded its 4th periodic review by the Human Rights Committee under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) in Geneva, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced on Tuesday.

The Indian delegation, spearheaded by Attorney General R. Venkataramani and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, included Secretary (West) Pavan Kapoor and senior officials from multiple ministries such as Women and Child Development, Social Justice and Empowerment, and Minority Affairs.

The Human Rights Committee, which consists of 18 independent experts, evaluates ICCPR implementation and reviews reports from States Parties, making recommendations accordingly. India, a State Party since 1979, has undergone three previous reviews, the last in 1997. The latest review held on July 15-16, 2024, involved discussions on a wide range of civil and political rights issues, showcasing India's commitment to human rights.

According to the MEA, topics discussed included anti-corruption measures, non-discrimination, women's and minorities' status, counter-terrorism, national security, and privacy laws. India's achievements in protecting vulnerable groups and contributions to the global human rights framework were also highlighted.

The Human Rights Committee praised India's traditions rooted in pluralism, non-violence, and diversity, aligning with human rights principles. The review underscored India's dedication to the international human rights framework and its ongoing efforts to protect and promote citizens' human rights.
