The Indian Medical Association (IMA), led by national president RV Asokan, has thrown its support behind the junior doctors of West Bengal who are on an ongoing hunger strike. The strike, motivated by the demand for justice following the murder of a colleague, seeks the government's intervention in improving hospital security and conditions.
During a visit to the protesting site, Asokan met with the doctors and expressed his admiration for their resilience, describing them as 'the real heroes.' The junior doctors have articulated their demands and frustrations over the state's response, emphasizing security in hospitals and infrastructure improvements.
The urgent plea for action comes as the health of the fasting doctors deteriorates, leading the IMA to appeal directly to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Among their demands are increased police protection, the removal of the Health Secretary, and enhanced hospital facilities to ensure safety and efficiency in healthcare delivery.
