Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has announced that a private medical college in the state has received permission to commence an MBBS course for 150 students in the 2024-25 academic year. The approval was granted by the National Medical Council (NMC).

During an Assembly session, Saha detailed that Tripura University has also given its consent for affiliation to the Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC) located in West Tripura. Half of the MBBS seats will be reserved for students from the northeastern state.

Concerns have been raised by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman and Leader of Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury regarding the high fees, potentially making the course inaccessible to meritorious students due to socio-economic conditions. Saha assured that the government is focused on creating a business-friendly environment while keeping oversight on the college's operations.
