Junior doctors from different medical colleges in Kolkata took to the streets on Monday, rallying towards the Kolkata Police headquarters, Lalbazar. They demanded the resignation of police commissioner Vineet Goyal, citing alleged police inaction during an August 14 vandalism incident at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The protesting medics also raised concerns over the police's handling of the August 9 rape-murder case of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run hospital. The investigation was subsequently handed over to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court on August 13.

Authorities erected guardrails on B B Ganguly Street, preventing the rally from reaching Lalbazar. Despite this, the junior doctors insisted their march would remain peaceful.
