The Union Home Ministry has ordered the deployment of Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, sources unveiled on Wednesday.

The Home Ministry's directive follows an order from the Supreme Court, emphasizing the need for enhanced security at the medical institution.

On Wednesday, a CISF team, headed by a Deputy Inspector General (DIG), inspected the hospital, the site where a 31-year-old trainee doctor was gruesomely raped and murdered earlier this month.

The body of the doctor was discovered in the hospital's seminar room on August 9. A civic volunteer, who frequented the hospital, was arrested the following day concerning the crime.

In response, massive protests have erupted across the country, significantly disrupting medical services as doctors strike under various organizations demanding nationwide safety protocols for healthcare professionals.

Reacting swiftly, the Supreme Court constituted a 10-member task force on Tuesday to draft a national protocol ensuring the safety and adequate facilities for doctors. The task force is expected to deliver an interim report within three weeks and a final report in two months.

The apex court also mandated the deployment of CISF at RG Kar hospital to safeguard the medics, signifying a pivotal step towards securing healthcare professionals.
