Innovative Project 'Swasthya Nagaram' Launched to Combat Urban TB in Telangana

The 'Swasthya Nagaram' project was launched in Telangana's Medchal Malkajgiri district to demonstrate an innovative model for TB-free municipalities. It will focus on surveillance, prevention, and quality TB care in urban areas, using digital apps and molecular tests for early diagnosis. The project aims to reduce TB incidence, mortality, and patient costs over three years.

An innovative project titled 'Swasthya Nagaram' aimed at creating TB-free municipalities was launched in Telangana's Medchal Malkajgiri district. This initiative, unveiled by Telangana's Commissioner of Health and Family Welfare R V Karnan, focuses on surveillance, prevention, and quality TB care in urban settings.

Active screening through a digital app and upfront molecular tests will be key to early diagnosis and prevention. Implemented over three years in Peerzadiguda, Boduppal, and Pocharam Municipal Corporations, the project aims to reduce TB incidence by one-third and lower related mortality and patient costs.

Central TB Division Deputy Director General Dr Rajendra P Joshi emphasized the project's role in restricting TB spread due to internal migration and slum growth. The initiative will also involve vulnerability mapping, care provider engagement, and social support to TB-affected families, ensuring a comprehensive approach to tackling urban TB.
