Nigerian artist Fola David is striving to break the Guinness World Record for the largest drawing by an individual. Over the span of six days in a Lagos stadium, David, who is also a medical doctor, created a 1,050 square meter artwork called 'Unity in Diversity,' depicting two giant hands holding Nigeria's map. His goal: to showcase the country's rich cultural heritage.
With about 250 ethnic groups, Nigeria is Africa's most populous nation, divided roughly equally between Muslims and Christians. Ethnic tensions are frequent, but David hopes his piece will serve as a reminder that diversity should be a source of unity and strength. 'Our diversity should be seen as something that unites us, as something that strengthens us, rather than something that should create that divide between us,' David commented after completing his piece on Sunday night.
The Guinness World Record body has been notified and will need to officially certify the artwork if David is to surpass the current record of 629.98 square meters set in 2021 by Indian artist Ravi Soni.
