In a significant development, the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has lifted the restrictions on onboarding UPI users for WhatsApp Pay. This move permits WhatsApp Pay to offer UPI services to its entire Indian user base, a leap from the previous phased expansion approach.
NPCI, the governing body for the Unified Payments Interface in India, had earlier set a cap of 100 million users for WhatsApp Pay, controlled through phased user acquisition. This cap removal marks a pivotal moment as WhatsApp Pay can now reach its full potential in the Indian market.
Despite this expansion, WhatsApp Pay is required to comply with all existing UPI guidelines and circulars applicable to Third-Party Application Providers. NPCI's role as an operational backbone for retail payments in India continues under the aegis of the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian Banks' Association.
