In a clear dismissal of recent reports, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar refuted claims that the state government plans to impose a green cess on water bills. He described the rumors as 'bogus news' spread by the Bharatiya Janata Party. Shivakumar assured there is no proposal for such a cess.
The controversy erupted following reports suggesting that Karnataka's Forest Department would propose a minor green cess to fund Western Ghats' conservation. The Western Ghats, a crucial biodiversity site, are vital for numerous rivers including Tunga, Bhadra, and Kaveri, which supply water across Karnataka.
While Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah accused the BJP of attempting to destabilize the government by offering Rs 50 crore to Congress MLAs, Shivakumar echoed the sentiment but refrained from providing further details immediately, promising further discussions with the Chief Minister.
