The Goa government's subsidy program for marigold farmers is proving to be highly successful, reducing the coastal state's dependence on marigold imports from Karnataka and Maharashtra. According to Sandeep Phal Desai, Director of Agriculture, union and state schemes are encouraging a boost in marigold plantations.
Increased local production has notably supported Goa's demand during festive seasons like Dussehra and Diwali. This year, 180 tonnes of marigolds have been produced by around 400 farmers, covering 30 hectares. The cultivation area has significantly risen from 15 hectares in 2022 to 30 hectares today.
Farmers are receiving Rs 75,000 per hectare in subsidies, combining funds from both the National Horticulture Mission and state initiatives. The scheme benefits areas like Bardez and Sattari and is supported by self-help groups under the ATMA scheme, all under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's guidance.
