Unexpected Turn: Oslo Tram's Unplanned Encounter
A tram in Oslo derailed, crashing into a store and injuring several people. Emergency services responded swiftly, treating the injured, who were not severely hurt. The tram veered off its tracks while making a turn, leading to the incident that is under investigation for root causes.
An unexpected tram derailment unfolded in central Oslo on Tuesday, resulting in injuries to the driver and three others, Norwegian police confirmed. The incident prompted rapid response from emergency services who administered treatments on-site, reporting no life-threatening injuries among the 20 passengers aboard during the collision.
The tram, operated by Oslo transport authority Sporveien, veered off course while negotiating a left turn onto Storgata, a key thoroughfare. Subsequently, it smashed into a computer store housed within a four-story building at street level. Police officer Anders Roenning disclosed that instead of turning, the tram proceeded straight into the shop.
Witness Thomas Larsen, 41, narrowly avoided being caught in the accident. Riding his electric scooter, he hit the brakes as the tram derailed before his eyes, narrowly escaping harm by mere seconds. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the derailment, with Sporveien specialists set to conduct on-site inquiries.
The accident scene experienced a substantial rescue operation with area evacuations and cordoning. Structural safety inspections of the impacted building are pending, according to police.
