The Indian government is navigating a complicated landscape as it weighs the potential introduction of Herbicide-tolerant BT (HTBT) cotton alongside the expanded application of herbicide glyphosate, amidst intensifying industry demands, Agriculture Commissioner P K Singh revealed on Friday.
India, a significant cotton producer, traditionally exercises caution concerning genetically modified crops. While industry players push for more glyphosate use, a committee examines the implications of introducing HTBT cotton, with a decision still pending, according to Singh.
Reflecting on challenges in weed control as labor costs rise, Singh and ICAR Deputy Director General S K Chaudhari underscored the necessity for advanced techniques, especially considering climate change's impact on weed proliferation and agricultural productivity.
