External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar recently made a significant diplomatic visit to Sri Lanka, marking his first trip since the National People's Power government assumed office. His visit included discussions with former Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, whom he commended for his role in advancing bilateral ties over the past two years.

Wickremesinghe, a key leader of the United National Party, ran as an independent in the recent presidential elections, albeit unsuccessfully against the new government led by Anura Kumara Dissanayake. During his tenure, Wickremesinghe introduced substantial reforms in the power and energy sectors to address Sri Lanka's economic challenges following the nation's declaration of its first-ever sovereign default in 2022.

With escalating economic difficulties, India stepped in with a $4 billion aid package, aiding Sri Lanka's recovery. As negotiations continue for a $2.9 billion IMF bailout, the NPP government has reaffirmed its commitment to the economic reform program initiated by Wickremesinghe's administration.
