In response to calls for protests, demonstrations, and campaigns in Delhi during the first week of October, the Police Commissioner announced the enforcement of Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The regulation will be in effect from September 30 to October 5.
The Commissioner's office stated that Delhi's general atmosphere is sensitive due to various issues, including the proposed Waqf Amendment Bill, the Shahi Idgah dispute in Sadar Bazaar, politically charged MCD Standing Committee elections, and the pending results of DUSU elections. Furthermore, with legislative elections underway in Jammu, Kashmir, and Haryana, there is a need to monitor movement along Delhi's borders.
Commissioner Sanjay Arora highlighted that the order prohibits the assembly of five or more unauthorized persons, the carrying of firearms and various potential weapons, and the organization of public protests. Violations will be punishable under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita 2023.
