IMD Issues Red Alert: Intense Rain and Thunderstorms Expected in Mumbai and Surrounding Regions

The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Mumbai and several districts due to expected thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Strong surface winds and hot, uncomfortable weather are also predicted in isolated areas of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Wednesday issued a red alert for Mumbai, Maharashtra, effective until September 26, 8:30 am. IMD forecasts include thunderstorms, intense spells of rain, and gusty winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph, likely in isolated areas of Mumbai, Palghar, Nandurbar, Dhule, Jalgaon, Solapur, and Satara.

Earlier, the IMD issued a red alert for Thane, Palghar, and Raigad while extending the warning to Ratnagiri. The national weather bulletin on September 25 predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated parts of Konkan & Goa, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, East Madhya Pradesh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Marathwada, Coastal Karnataka, and Bihar. Regions such as Rayalaseema, Gujarat, Chhattisgarh, and West Madhya Pradesh are expected to experience heavy rainfall.

On Tuesday, the IMD predicted light to moderate rain in isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from September 26 to September 30. The agency also forecast strong surface winds with speeds of 30-40 kmph to prevail in these regions. North Tamil Nadu is expected to experience moderate rain accompanied by lightning over the next seven days, with temperatures possibly rising by 2-4°C above normal. Hot and uncomfortable weather is likely in isolated pockets of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal due to high humidity and temperatures.
