The 39th International Coastal Cleanup Day was marked by the Eastern Naval Command (ENC) with a grand cleanup activity in conjunction with Swachhata Hi Seva 2024. The event witnessed massive participation across Visakhapatnam, focusing on Yarada, Naval Harbour/Channel, and Kalinga beaches.

Approximately 1,000 Naval personnel and their families took part in the Coastal Cleanup Drive. Additionally, ENC's outstation units with waterfronts also conducted similar drives, actively involving the local population. According to an ENC press release, these efforts aim to enhance beach cleanliness and foster community collaboration.

The cleanup was not just a physical activity but also an awareness campaign to educate locals about the importance of maintaining clean beaches, protecting the environment, and nurturing marine biodiversity. ENC has consistently undertaken various environmental initiatives for preserving the coastlines.

Meanwhile, the Indian Coast Guard orchestrated a 'Beach Clean Drive' at Marina Beach in Chennai, engaging Chennai Corporation staff, NGOs, students, and the general public. IG Donny Michael, Commander of Coast Guard Region (East), highlighted that over 200 beaches in India participated in the drive, spotlighting the importance of public awareness in marine preservation.

The Ministry of Environment highlighted that International Coastal Cleanup Day, observed annually on the third Saturday of September, aims to inspire global action for cleaner oceans and waterways, addressing marine pollution. Established to spotlight growing beach pollution, the day serves as a global pledge towards environmental stewardship.
