The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken into custody Abhijit Mondal, the officer-in-charge of Tala police station, and Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, in connection with the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. Mondal was brought to BR Singh Hospital in Kolkata for a medical examination following his arrest on Saturday.

In a related development, junior doctors protesting at Swasthya Bhavan celebrated the arrests. They were seen singing at the protest site and expressed satisfaction over the CBI's actions. Speaking to ANI, one junior doctor stated, 'We have been demanding the arrest of Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal for tampering with evidence. We are very happy as the CBI has arrested them.' The protestors urged the CBI to continue its investigation and arrest others involved in evidence tampering.

Earlier, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee addressed the ongoing protests, explaining that the request for live streaming her meeting with doctors could not be accommodated due to legal proceedings in the Supreme Court. Banerjee assured the doctors that a recording of the meeting would be provided and urged them to join the discussion. 'If you do not want to come to the meeting, please come inside the residence, have tea, and then proceed to leave,' she said. The second-year postgraduate medical student was raped and murdered inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
