In the wake of the recent rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Friday urged West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to prioritize action over words regarding women's safety. Patel stressed the importance of timely and fair enforcement of laws like the POCSO Act to ensure justice.

Taking to social platform X, Patel stated, "Mamta Didi, we need actions, not just words. The POCSO Act and other laws for women's safety are robust, but their impact relies on swift and fair action by local police. From investigation to conviction, timely justice is crucial." He cited examples from Gujarat, where a chargesheet was filed in just 10 days in the Pandesara POCSO case, and the rapist sentenced to death in 22 days. Similarly, in Puna, a rapist was sentenced to death within 32 days. Patel also highlighted a case where Gujarat Police filed a chargesheet in 9 days and secured a death sentence for the murderer in 75 days.

Furthermore, Patel pointed out that in the Bhavnagar POCSO case, a chargesheet was filed within 24 hours, and justice served in 52 days. He underscored that perpetrators in stalking and harassment cases have received 5-year sentences. Demanding prompt action and responsibility from the West Bengal Government, Patel declared, "Women's safety is a fundamental human right, not a political issue. We must act with urgency, transparency, and collective responsibility. Let's ensure our mothers, daughters, and sisters live without fear. No more delays, no more excuses—only prompt action and accountability."

The remarks come in the context of the passage of an anti-rape bill by the West Bengal CM amid rising agitation over the RG Kar medical incident. The West Bengal Assembly unanimously passed the 'Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) 2024' on Tuesday.
