Tata Power Delhi Distribution (Tata Power-DDL) and Kyoto-based Nissin Electric have embarked on a landmark project to introduce India's first micro substation with a power voltage transformer (PVT), aiming to supply stable electricity to regions devoid of a power grid.

The collaboration, part of an international initiative on Japan's Energy Efficiency Technologies, is driven by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Tata Power-DDL, serving over 2 million customers in North Delhi, stated that the project targets cost-effective power solutions for remote Indian communities.

In lieu of expensive and space-intensive grid construction, the micro substation will convert high-voltage transmission line power to low-voltage residential power. This 100-kVA demonstration will step down 66 kV to 240 volts within a compact 40 square metre area, potentially revolutionizing power supply in rural areas.
