India's Power Surge: Renewables and Storage Lead the Way

Power demand in India will rise by 15GW annually for the next six years, with significant contributions from renewable energy and storage solutions. By 2030, an additional 85 GW will be needed during solar hours and 90 GW during non-solar hours. The government is focusing on expanding coal, solar, wind, and storage capacities.

India's power demand is set to increase at a higher rate of 15GW per year for the next six years compared to the previous decade's 11GW annual growth, a senior government official announced on Friday.

By 2030, about 85 GW of additional demand will be added during solar hours and over 90 GW during non-solar hours, stated Additional Secretary Power Srikant Nagulapalli at an Industry Conclave organised by IEEMA.

''Although the CAGR may not fully capture this growth, in absolute terms, it signifies a substantial leap. To accommodate this rise in demand, we are expanding coal capacities alongside solar, wind, storage, and transmission capacity,'' Nagulapalli added.
