The African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) recently organized a two-day free medical camp at Dhobley Police Station, offering crucial healthcare services to over sixty Somali Police Force (SPF) officers and inmates from Lower Juba. This initiative, led by the ATMIS Police Reforms, Restructuring, and Development Unit (RRD), aimed to improve access to quality healthcare and address the medical needs of local police and vulnerable groups.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kailian Dakurah, the Medical Advisor at ATMIS Police Mission Headquarters, underscored the mission’s commitment to delivering quality healthcare directly to SPF officers who often face challenges in accessing medical services due to their demanding operational environment. DSP Dakurah expressed the intent to conduct more such medical camps to help Federal Member States (FMS) bridge healthcare gaps and strengthen the SPF’s healthcare infrastructure.

The medical camp provided diagnosis and treatment for various conditions including hypertension, kidney disorders, skin infections, gastritis, and musculoskeletal pain. Patients in need of specialized care were referred to the Dhobley Level Two Hospital, which is operated by Kenyan troops.

The Chief of Dhobley Police Station, Mohamed Abdi Omar, praised ATMIS Police for their efforts to enhance healthcare access in Lower Juba and suggested extending the program to other areas. He advocated for the establishment of a dedicated medical center to offer ongoing support and make such initiatives a regular feature.

This initiative follows ATMIS Police’s previous success in assisting 174 SPF personnel, including 110 officers in Baidoa, South West State, last December. Looking ahead, similar outreach programs are planned for other Federal Member States as part of ATMIS Police’s broader campaign to raise healthcare awareness within the security forces.
