Heavy downpours for more than an hour on Monday caused the Kodappam Kalvai canal to overflow, leading to water accumulation on the nearby railway bridge. The rains also impacted traffic to 10 villages due to the collapse of a 15-foot circular wall in Kunthu Soppai, Ootty. Traffic near Kanthal was diverted as well.
Two occupants of a car stranded by the floodwaters were rescued by the fire department. An official confirmed there were no casualties.
Buses and other vehicles trapped in waterlogged areas, including the central Government bus station, were also retrieved. Nilgiris faced severe weather, including thunderstorms and lightning. The Indian Meteorological Department issued an orange alert for Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal for Tuesday, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall.
