The Budameru Vagu river, often called the 'Sorrow of Vijayawada,' is causing a flood-like situation in the city due to heavy rains. Aerial visuals reveal rainwater inundating various areas.

According to the weather department, a depression moving northwest from the north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts has caused continuous rainfall, leading to severe flooding in Vijayawada's Rama Krishna Puram area. Houses and cars have been submerged.

Police and NDRF teams have initiated rescue operations, relocating affected residents to safety. The IMD has also warned of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and lightning in the coming days. Isolated thunderstorms are expected across North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam.

IMD's Srinuvas stated that the depression would likely weaken but continue causing widespread rain. A red alert has been issued for certain districts. Heavy rainfall on Saturday led to a house collapse in Mogalrajapuram, resulting in one fatality and two hospitalizations.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu reviewed the situation, directed school closures in affected areas, and called for the installation of warning boards and issuance of alerts. He cautioned about possible hazards like falling power lines and trees.

Naidu noted that the Budameru Canal's overflow had worsened the situation, leaving thousands stranded. He assured continuous monitoring, mobilization of rescue teams, and delivery of essential supplies. Additional boats and NDRF teams will aid in evacuation and medical assistance. Helpline numbers will be provided to the public.
